What the DS-160 photo check looks for
The State Department accepts a square JPG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, no larger than 240 KB, with your head (chin to top of hair) taking up 50% to 69% of the height. The oval guide is drawn at that size: zoom until your head fills it from chin to crown.
The background must be white or off-white, with no shadows. You may not wear glasses, and the photo must be from the last six months. Edited or AI-generated photos are refused, so the white-background option only replaces the backdrop; it never changes your face.
How to use it
- Choose your form; its sizes appear and can be changed.
- Add a clear phone photo of your face and drag it into the oval.
- Optionally make the background white, or add your name and date.
- Press Make photo, check the ticks and download. Do the same for the signature.
