MP4 to GIF, free and private

A GIF plays everywhere without a play button: chat apps, emails, documentation, forum posts. This tool turns a short part of a video into one. Pick the moment, set the length and width, and download the result.

The conversion runs on your own device with FFmpeg, the same engine video professionals use. Your video is never uploaded, which also means there is no queue, no file-size paywall and no watermark on the result.

How it works

  1. Add a video: drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file onto the box, or click to choose one.
  2. Choose the clip: set where it starts and how many seconds it lasts.
  3. Pick size and smoothness: 480 px at 15 fps suits most uses.
  4. Convert, preview the GIF, and download it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my GIF file so large?

GIF is an old format that stores every frame as a full picture with at most 256 colours. Size grows with width, frame rate and length. Halving the length roughly halves the file; dropping from 640 to 480 px width saves about 40 percent.

Is my video uploaded?

No. FFmpeg runs inside this page as WebAssembly. The first visit downloads the video engine (about 32 MB), and after that the conversion works on your device, even if you go offline.

Which video formats work?

MP4, MOV (including iPhone videos), WebM, MKV, M4V and most other common formats. If a file cannot be read, try converting it to MP4 first.

Is there a watermark?

No. The GIF is exactly what you set up, with nothing added.
