Remove a background without uploading your photo

Almost every free background remover works the same way: you hand over your picture, their server does the work, and you hope it gets deleted afterwards. For a product shot that is fine. For a passport photo, a picture of your child, or an unreleased design, it is a genuine problem.

This tool takes the other route. A small neural network is downloaded to your browser once — about 4.4 MB — and from then on every image is processed on your own machine. The photo itself is never transmitted. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will keep working.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The model file is downloaded to you; your image is not sent in the other direction. Everything after that happens in your browser's memory.

Why is there a one-time download?

Background removal needs a neural network, and because the work happens on your device the network has to come to you. It is roughly 4.4 MB, and your browser caches it — the second image you process starts immediately.

Is there a watermark, sign-up or limit?

None of the three. There is no server cost behind this tool, so there is nothing to meter.

What kind of images work best?

Anything with a clear main subject: people, products, pets, objects. The model looks for the most visually prominent thing in the frame and keeps it. Busy scenes with no obvious subject, and very fine detail like flyaway hair or glassware, are the hardest cases — that is true of every automatic background remover, not just this one.

Can I use the results commercially?

Yes. The model behind this tool is U²-Net, released under the Apache 2.0 licence, and we place no restrictions on what you do with your own images.

Why does it look softer than a paid tool?

To keep the download small enough for a web page, this uses the compact version of the model. It is very good at finding the subject, slightly less precise at the last few pixels of the edge. The edge-softness slider helps you tune that trade-off.
